Thermal Products Solutions Advances Leadership In Systems for “Green” Products Manufacturing
A range of advanced thermal capabilities has vaulted a central Pennsylvania company to a leadership position in technologies that support “green” products manufacturing. From environmental chambers accommodating tests of large photovoltaic panels to furnaces that manufacture silicon crystal ingots, TPS provides manufacturers of environmentally oriented products with versatile, repeatable, precise thermal control.
In addition, TPS integrates environmentally friendly methods and materials into its own manufacturing processes. The result: products that deliver innovative, high-quality, cost-effective, and environmentally responsible solutions to major industrial firms worldwide.
For example, the company’s Tenney ETCU chambers, designed specifically for solar panel testing, employ environmentally friendly refrigerants, which generate lower compressor temperatures. Each ETCU solar panel test chamber is scaled to match standard panel sizes. Precision systems for temperature and non-corrosive humidity testing operate smoothly and quietly, damping vibration to cut equipment noise.
ETCU chambers meet various UL, IEC, and ASTM standards. The chambers use the Tenney VersaTenn V control system, enabling users to precisely control and monitor chamber operations. TPS tailors test chambers to individual customers’ specific needs, providing IEEE488 interface, water demineralization system, and multiple heating and cooling systems. Solar panel manufacturers have responded with large orders for the ETCU chambers.

Equally innovative is the TPS line of Kayex crystal-cell growers. These furnaces produce the raw crystals used in the rapidly expanding solar cell market.
To grow crystals, a glass crucible containing silicon chips is placed in the furnace. At maximum temperature, the chips dissolve into liquid silicon, and a seed crystal is lowered into the liquid. A long, thin crystal begins to grow, its final diameter carefully controlled through regulation of the process parameters. A taper with a sharp point is imparted to the crystal, limiting thermal shock when the solid crystal is withdrawn from the liquid silicon.
TPS Kayex crystal-growing furnaces advance single-crystal technology. In addition, Kayex offers the low-cost Flex Feeder, capable of feeding most flowable polysilicon for top-off and recharge. In-house hot zone modeling capabilities maximize results.
Kayex crystal growing furnaces maximize usable ingot generated per year, a critical issue given current high costs of raw materials. Built-in quality of design, reliability, and uptime support this superior productivity, and a 100-percent-automated control system delivers high repeatability, reliability, and flexibility.
The experienced Kayex technical staff designs nothing but crystal pullers. More than a thousand Kayex pullers from TBS are installed around the world, with dedicated support provided in North America, Europe and Asia.
